Holiday Inn Summer Wrap Up

It seems like yesterday that we blogged about Ice Cream For Breakfast! But here we are a month and a half later wondering where the summer went…

Either way this summer was one of our best! We had the warmest summer in decades, many fun events on property, a record number of sold out nights, and so many great guests stay with us. Needless to say we’ve been a little busy…

Here’s what we’ve been up to since our last post:

Jack’s 80s Beach Party – Saturday, July 24th

Holiday Inn & Jack's staff dressed in their 80s best

Wow! And we thought our first 80s Party in April was radical! This turned out to be our biggest bar night of the year – even surpassing New Year’s Eve!

We started the fun out at our Tiki Bar with Digital Joes Entertainment spinning everyone’s 80s favorites. We had an 80s dance off to Love Shack by the B-52s and a big hair contest. Later on, we moved the party inside and everyone rocked out to Hat Trick and we handed out prizes for best dressed.

Mark your calendars for our next 80s Party on Saturday, September 25th!!!

Jack’s Country Hootenanny – Saturday, July 31st

Jack's bar staff ready for the Hootenanny

We had our first country music event and it did not disappoint! Even those of us who are not fans of country music couldn’t help but have a great time. We had live music on the lawn from The Stolen Horses Band, a YeeHaw Contest, and more!

We can’t wait to have another Hootenanny! Stay tuned….

Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival Parade – Saturday, August 7th

Our Holiday Inn Float

This was our 2nd year in the Coast Guard Festival Parade and we were glad to be able to do it again this year. If you don’t know, Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival is the biggest week of the year for Grand Haven. Hundreds of thousands of people come to our small town to celebrate those who serve and who have served for the United States Coast Guard. They also enjoy the carnival, parades, music, and the fireworks – which are some of the best in the Midwest.

For more pictures from the parade, visit our Facebook Page

Thanks to everyone who helped make this summer so great! If you didn’t make it out this year, we hope to see you soon! Stay tuned for more events and to learn about our upcoming renovations!

Ice Cream For Breakfast for Give Kids the World

Here’s the front page newspaper article from the Friday, July 23rd issue of the Grand Haven Tribune:

Ice cream for breakfast a tasty treat for Justin Strait’s favorite charity

Fri, Jul 23, 2010

BY MARIE HAVENGA – Grand Haven Tribune
mhavenga@grandhaventribune.com

After five open heart surgeries, 7-year-old Justin Strait hopes Tri-Cities residents will open their hearts — and donate to a charity near and dear to his.

Pictured Back Row – Left to Right: Stefanie Herder, Keena Steinke, Jody Sprite, Tiffany Strait, and Pat Strait. Front Row – Kari Strait, Justin Strait, and Cameron Steinke.

Donating is a piece of cake — well, actually, a bowl of ice cream. The Spring Lake Holiday Inn is hosting an Ice Cream for Breakfast event from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday to benefit the Orlando-based Give Kids the World Village, where Justin stayed for a week in 2008.

The idea is simple and sweet. Make a donation at the door and prepare to break breakfast rules. Grab a dish, fill it with your favorite flavors, add toppings and spoon your way through the morning. It’s delightfully decadent — and for a good cause.

The 51-acre Give Kids the World Village provides lodging for children with life-threatening illnesses.

Justin was born with three holes in his heart and a detached pulmonary artery. The Mary E. White Elementary School first-grader has endured five surgeries, the most recent in December.

“We’re hoping this one will hold until at least his teen years,” said his mom, Tiffany, who is an assistant restaurant manager at the Holiday Inn. “He has so much energy right now you wouldn’t even know he was sick.”

With the help of the Make a Wish Foundation, Justin and his family spent a week at the village in March 2008 while they vacationed at Disney World.

“His wish was to see Mickey Mouse,” Tiffany said. “We stayed at the villa. It’s like a candyland theme with an arcade, mini golf, swimming pools … It’s just awesome. They sent us to Disney and the Disney characters come to see the children if they’re too sick to go to Disney. There’s a snoring tree that the kids think is awesome. There’s a trash can that talks to you. The place is just magical. It’s really a magical place.”

The menu is also magical — kids can eat ice cream any time, even for breakfast.

Give Kids the World dedicated the month of July to fundraising with the ice cream for breakfast theme. The local Holiday Inn jumped on the cause — especially since Tiffany and her husband Patrick both work there.

Stefanie Herder, director of sales for the Holiday Inn, said Tiffany first mentioned the event and Herder heard about it again two weeks later at a Holiday Inn training session. Give Kids the World is a charity of choice for the Holiday Inn headquarters.

“We’re trying to do more community things in the area,” said Herder of the event that will take place on the outdoor patio. In case of rain, the ice cream will be moved indoors. “We try to keep it as local as possible and we have a personal connection with Tiffany and Pat. We love them. Both of them have won employee of the month.”

Tiffany said she and her family look forward to the opportunity to give back to the organization that housed them two years ago.

“Everything we raise on Saturday will go toward the villa in honor of Justin,” Tiffany said. “Finally we can give something back. We’ve tried saying just ‘thank you,’ but that doesn’t seem like enough.”‘

Justin’s 10-year-old sister Kari will set up a bake sale during the ice cream buffet. She and her grandma, aunts and cousins baked up the goodies. All proceeds go to the villa.

Justin hopes to help scoop ice cream, which was donated by Culver’s, Dairy Treat, Meijer, Sysco Foods and Holiday Inn.

“He’s very excited about this fundraiser,” Tiffany said. “He calls the villa ‘our house in Florida.’ He always wants to go back to our house in Florida because he says it’s more fun than our house in Michigan.”

Fourth Annual 4th of July Lawn Party

This year was our fourth year hosting our annual 4th of July Lawn Party and it was another success!

We have a lot of fun holding this event every year and keep trying to make it bigger and better. This year’s event activities included a Moonwalk, Watermelon Eating Contest, and Duck Pond. This year’s favorite activities were the Dunk Tank and the Watermelon Eating Contest.

Dunk Tanks are always fun but we filled ours with managers and (willing) employees. Nathan our Guest Services Manager, Stefanie our Director of Sales, and April our Assistant General Manager all had their turn in the Dunk Tank. Three balls were only $1 and all of the proceeds are going to the Harbor Humane Society. We raised almost $200! Check out our YouTube Channel to see everyone getting dunked!

The Watermelon Eating Contest was beyond hilarious! We had two age groups – 12 & under and 13 & up. We had over 20 kids battle it out for the championship. This picture is of the winners of both age groups with their finished melons. You can check out video of the contest on our YouTube Channel.

Our goal every year is to have a fun event that’s family friendly and open to the public. With our view of the Grand Haven Fireworks and our Great Lawn, we love having everyone join us to celebrate 4th of July! We already have plans in the works for next year and can’t wait to keep making this event bigger and better!

You can check out all of our event pictures on our Facebook page!

Grand Haven Sand Sculpture Contest 2010

This year was our first year participating in the Grand Haven Sand Sculpture Contest. We knew going into it, we would create something with Holiday Inn pride but we just didn’t know what. Once we stepped foot on the beach and saw the competition, we knew we had to do something great. With only two hours to complete our sculpture we couldn’t pull off the sand replica of our property like we would have originally wanted. Plus nothing screams Holiday Inn like the iconic logo and script.

With nothing but a picture downloaded onto a cell phone, we created this sculpture with nothing more than sand, water, and food coloring to darken the script.

We didn’t place in any of the categories but we didn’t care. It was so great to hear so many people walk by and say “Holiday Inn!”

We will for sure be competing again next in 2011! See you at Grand Haven City Beach then!
